Home School animal painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

This is so big at 24x48inches. I started this large painting quickly realizing that I was in over my head and then I said to myself...Just breathe. Soon I was lovin painting cows again and everything went fine. It is amazing how sometimes things just turn out ok even when you don't expect it.

A very large rooster at a whooping 30x30x1.5 inches. Wow! What have I learned from painting big?

That Big takes a whole lot of paint. I have enjoyed doing this for a change though. In fact I like it even more than painting little. How can that be I ask? I don't know it is just a pure mystery. I have to admit that I never entertained the thought of painting that large until I went to an art show and saw in person how wonderful Carol Carmichaels paintings were and they were all big so I decided to turn over a new leaf. Hope you enjoy because I am loving them.

This is my Granddaughter Michelle. She dressed as Minnie Mouse for Halloween last year. I could not resist painting her. This is in fact the second painting I have done of her in this outfit. It is so cute. I have been painting larger than my norm. This painting is oil on gallery wrapped canvas. It is 36x24 inches. The stars and tiny white dots give it a mystical appearance. I love it and hope you do.

Table For Two still life painting by Alabama Artist Angela Sullivan

I painted this for my entry for Savannah Christmas on The River Show.

I had to send in a painting 50% complete and I thought that once again you might like to see the process for my paintings. Oil painting done Alla Prima on 24x12 stretched canvas. I left some bold brush strokes while leaving areas of thick rich paint created by using a palette knife. I added the bright yellow spot of color on the left upper area of the jar and laid in a little purplish right beside it for contrast. I added highlights to the pears and painted the table cloth in and then dragged paint down and across to make the table cloth under the towel.

This is the start of the painting blocked mainly just establishing location without much crisp detail.

Next I added the cloth, table edge, and pears.

This is where I start adding the background color and making the water to look like water by going pretty light in the background inside the glass jar. I also add lighter, brighter green yellow stems. I try to keep the cloth without a lot of crisp detail inside and behind the jar so my main focus will not compete for attention.

The original painting is not quite this dark but close. 8x10 oil on canvas panel. I don't really know why I don't usually paint landscapes. I think just because it is an unfamiliar area for me.
